Yellow Chamber 3
Installation - external view (MDF, mirror, acrylic, paint, T8 fluorescent bulbs, objects)
2011
In a field of ephemeral objects, positioned to form an ambiguous landscape, the Chamber series explores the physicality and illusions of space. Using numerous mirrors and constructs of light, the work multiplies through reflection, giving the impression of an endless expanse.
I am concerned with the psychological influence of colour, its effect and sensory impact upon the viewer. The Chamber series can be site specific or incorporated into existing building spaces.
Visitors to the gallery were instantly drawn to explore West's installation, - As a glowing slither of yellow light could be glimpsed from across the space, people were pulled towards the work, placing their eye to the gap and submitting to the warmth of the Yellow Chamber. The groups of school children that visited the exhibition were particularly enthralled by the magic of the piece.
